Game Day: Saturday, July 18th

All right, this season is back in the swing of it.  

Padres got cooked like a dozen eggs.  

They are lambasted. Here is the truth about it, kudos to AJ Preller and the Padres for laying it all out on the line every season for the opportunity to win it.

I don't think the trades had anything to do with their failure. The long-term money on Machado, Tatis, Bogaerts and Merrill was the big failure.  The trade deadline strategy was spot on but it was a double-down and the dealer hit his hand.

The situation in San Diego is this:  they have to spend their way out of the long-term contracts.  Short term, high AAV to veterans, good scouting on minor league free agents.  Forgo the prospects.  Preller has already started moving in this direction.

It's going to be a tough five years in San Diego.  I'd trade Machado and include Kash Mayfield and Ethan Salas just to offload his salary.  

It would be nice to make Miller a Padre for life.  Morejon should be a Padre until he buys a lot on the coast in Baja.  Jason Adam too.  Those are the three you'd really like to retain but long-term money on any of them isn't worth the risk.  Players need to find some loyalty.  

Machado's season has been as bad of development for San Diego as Pearl Harbor.  

There was a real signficant threat to the West Coast of the United States when the Japs bombed the islands.  

It's similar.  That is how bad Machado has played.  It's more systemic than it is Machado's fault.  Merrill is hitting like crud too and they signed Merrill because he was a future star.  

What's new here?  Craig Stammen is a loser.  We found that out last night when he pulled King in the fifth.

It isn't Stammen's fault all together but he should be fired for being a bad manager and a cake eater.  Preller hired him and that is a failure assigned to him as well.

Preller also signed the long-term money but it isn't all his fault.  He was all-in, in every way, and that was Peter Seidler wanting to win a championship before he croaked off.

In a way, as despicable as it all is, the private money and that motivation to win is what makes MLB great.  Preller was a great GM in that regard.  

He needs to pivot this season.  He needs to trade Miller, Morejon and Andujar.  There are no trades for Bogie and Machado.  If he can trade Tatis for a bag of raquetballs, it's a good deal.

The Padres are done in '26.  That's what this article is all about in some way.  I had been a backer of the team.  I am on record as having the Padres for over 87 wins at the beginning of the season.  It is 100% an impossibility.  

This season did not go to plan and the failure is evident everywhere.  In the rotation, in the bullpen, on defense, the offense is so very miserable.

I can't say how they solve the issues because their biggest issues revolve around the long-term money to Machado, Tatis, Merrill and Bogaerts.

Postgame Report: MIN -1.5 (-120) Loss

It's 8-2 in the eighth.  Twins lost this one.  Joe Ryan had a bad game.  I'm not looking into this one too far. Today's Pick: A 2 Team Parlay

I have 1.56 units in play after yesterday's quasi-disappointment.   I'm going to rack a unit, and play a two team parlay tonight.  I've been stuck on 32 units banked for two weeks now.   I can't stand the number 32.  It has everything to do with Magic Johnson.  I don't like magic and I don't like Johnson.   Anyhow, now that we have 33 units in the bank, I feel better. Jose Canseco wore number 33.  Still one of my favorite players of all time.   No analysis today, I'm just making a pick.  My season for the most part is over.  I have 0.56 units in play, 4.0 units in my account, and 33 units in the bank.   The pick is a parlay on the Astros (-350) ML / Blue Jays (-175) ML for a (+105) payout. Postgame Report: MIL (-130) Winner

The Brewers kept it rolling last night, winning their fifth game in a row with a 7-2 victory over the Braves.   Joey Wentz cruised through the first two innings.  He had three K's and retired six in a row.   Brewer's center fielder Blake Perkins led off the third with a base hit.  Danny Jansen flew out to right.  Perkins stole second base.  Nine hole hitter Joey Ortiz put the ball in the gap and recorded an infield single that moved the runner to third.  Leadoff hitter Caleb Durbin walked to load the bases.   Bases loaded with one out.   Joey Wentz got a shallow fly ball from William Contreras.  Two down with Christian Yellich at the plate.  He got ahead 0-2 on Yellich and made a good pitch with the curveball but the veteran didn't chase.  Yellich collected an RBI on an infield hit that scored Perkins from third.  It's a 1-0 game.  Andrew Vaughn at the plate.  Wentz got ahead of Vaughn 0-2 and...
