Today's Pick: "Top Dogs" Two-Team Parlay
Looking at the numbers and the schedule of evening games, Skenes is set to take the ball for the Pirates and is still the top dog in the NL. If he isn't, Yamamoto is. Both are on the card and I like both games despite the long odds.
PIT (-220) ML vs. COL
Paul Skenes (6-6) starts for the Pirates. I have been critical of the guy for being so long and gangly but I watched him pitch some more and he does have great hips, the way he fronts the plate with his lower body and rotates his shoulders is very impressive. Skenes has posted a 6.19 K/BB ratio and a 0.927 WHIP in 82 innings of work this season and those are elite numbers. Both figures qualify as the best marks of his career. Despite six losses on his record, Skenes is pitching as good as he has ever has.
Tomoyuki Sugano (7-4) starts for the Rockies. Tommy "Sugar" finds a way to win. The Japanese legend is a good pitcher. If he has had a weakness this season it is left-handed power hitters and the Pirates stack up nicely from the left-hand side. It's a tough lineup for the Sugano.
An early call to the Rockies' bullpen is likely in the cards tonight. They are a well-rested group but they have had there issues this season.
Pittsburgh's bullpen is always a concern but they too are well rested. Skenes can get 7.0 innings tonight. Sugano isn't likely to do so. I like Skenes and the Pirates for the win and will lay the long odds at (-220).
It's an 8:10 PM CDT start from Coors Field in Denver, CO.
LAD (-245) ML vs. BAL
Yoshinobu Yamamoto (7-4) starts for LA. Yamamoto has been on fire. He scorched his first two starts in June. The Dodgers' Ace, and he has eclipsed Ohtani for that honor with the way he has pitched this season, has only allowed three hits and one earned run in his past 16.1 innings and has pitched eight innings plus in each of last two starts. Yamamoto is a good bet for 6.0 innings tonight.
Taylor Rogers (3-7) starts for Baltimore. I'm uncertain about Rogers. This guy was a flat out ace in '25 but he has been out of gas in '26. His velocity isn't off but he isn't getting the movement on the his pitches that he did last season. It's the four seamer and the changeup that aren't working this season and they were his most effective pitches last year. I don't think it's an easy fix. Rogers has been through this before. He has a history of injuries and "dead arm" issues. He is still a serviceable starting pitcher but he is no ace. He is a four or a five at best.
The Dodgers bullpen was roughed up a little last night but I like Henriquez, Vesia and Scott and they are the three pitchers most likely to get the call tonight.
Orioles' bullpen can factor in but Kitterdge and Wells are likely to rest tonight.
I like Yamamoto and LA and will pay the long odds at (-245) for the Dodgers' ace.
Game starts late, it's a 9:10 PM CDT first pitch from Chavez Ravine in Los Angeles, CA.
I got Skenes and Yamamoto on the bump tomight. Package that up and it's plus money at (+105). We carry in 2.31 units from last night's win. I'm going to press it all on two of the NL's top dogs.
