Pick Result: NYY (-180) ML vs. CHW

Looking at the boxscore from last night's 10-5 Yankees win over the White Sox, the Yankees lineup isn't all that terrifying without Judge and Grisham.  They sat Spencer Jones last night.  Dominguez doesn't swing the bat well from the right-hand side.  Chisolm, Volpe, Caballero, Amed Rosario:  all are around .700 OPS with Rosario having a good season at .768 OPS. It's not that they are a bad hitting team, but without Judge and Grisham and with a hole at the catcher position, this lineup looks manageable for a left-handed pitcher.

Yankees third baseman, Amed Rosario, got it started in the first inning with a double off White Sox starter, Anthony Kay.  Cody Bellinger got a fastball in his wheelhouse and hit one out of the park to put the Yanks up 2-0 after an inning of play.  Bellinger is a left-handed hitter that demolishes left-handed pitching.  It's an attribute that makes him one of the best players in the game.

Yankees' shortstop Anthony Volpe and catcher Ali Sanchez drove in a pair of runs in the second inning to make it a 4-0 Yankee lead.

White Sox slugger, Colson Montgomery, hit a three-run shot in the top of the third inning.  4-3 Yankees.  The White Sox are in this game after three innings of play.

Rodon settled in and struck out the side in the top of the fourth.  He escaped a lead-off double from White Sox second baseman Chase Meidroth in the fifth.  99 pitches through five, the White Sox had Rodon out of the game and were in this game into the bottom half of the fifth inning.

Cody Bellinger leads off in the bottom of the fifth with Jasson Dominguez on-deck.  This is a difficult spot.  Bellinger was 2-2 off Kay, a homer and a double and Dominguez on-deck makes it difficult to bring in a right-handed reliever.  White Sox manager, Will Veneble, called lefty Sean Newcomb into the game.  Bellinger collects a base-hit and the lefty Newcomb surrenders a double to Jasson Dominguez.  A pair of runners in scoring position with nobody out in the inning.  Lefty Jazz Chisolm is at the plate.  Newcomb gets Chisolm to pop out and there is one out with a pair of runners in scoring position.

This was an integral spot in the game.  Four right-handed hitters are lined up for the Yankees.  Jose Caballero at the plate, Anthony Volpe on-deck, Ali Sanchez in-the-hole and Paul Goldschmidt at the top of the Yankees' order.

A call.to the bullpen made sense.  Getting Caballero should be the top priority in this spot.  With two outs and first base open, you can work around Volpe to face Ali Sanchez with the bases loaded.  Veneble leaves Newcomb in to face Caballero and pays for it.  The righty Caballero drives in a pair with a base hit.  6-3 Yankees.

Volpe hits the ball hard but lines out and White Sox manager decides to go righty-righty on Ali Sanchez with two outs, worried about Goldschmidt on-deck.  Tyler Davis enters the game.  Ali Sanchez gets a base hit and Goldschmidt nails a three-run homer off Davis to make it 9-3 Yankees.

The batter you have to get in this situation is Caballero.  Veneble should have went righty-righty on Caballero.

It's not an exact science, the righty-righty and lefty-lefty matchups but looking at the play-by-play, if you get Caballero, it's a more manageable situation with two outs.  Lefties Brandon Eisert and Bryan Hudson were available to pitch to Chisolm and escaping the fifth wouldnhave kept the Sox in the game.

The Yankees' bullpen allowed a pair of runs and it's a 10-5 Yankees win.  It really was a much closer game than the scoreboard reflects.

Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt had big nights at the plate, they hit the big home runs but it was that base hit in the fifth from Jose Caballero that broke it open for the Yankees. Ali Sanchez also contributed with a pair of big hits.  Rodon pitched a good game.  It wasn't his best work but he gets the win in this one, his third win of the season.

Great game, and a nice win for the Pickstreak blog.
