Game Day: June 6th, 2026

I finished the film, "13 Tzameti", it is an homage to the Vietnam film, "The Deer Hunter".  Wealthy underworld figures gamble on the lives of sacrificial lambs.  It's a demented round-robin of Russian roulette.  The film reminded me of "The Deer Hunter" and one of the primary players, Fred Ulysse, has an eerie resemblance to Christopher Walken.  The acting was really good, the script is well written and the story moves at a good pace but overall the film lacked substance and was depraved.  I don't recommend it but if you are up for a cheap and illicit thrill, it is a well made film.

30 days free at the link above.  I'm going to watch another film this weekend, "The Mastermind", this film was at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and the 2025 Telluride Film Festival and was named one of the years Top10 Independent Films by the National Board of Review.  That is the kind of movies MUBI puts on.  There are a lot of films that will put a wrinkle in the brow of mainstream audiences but if you read the loglines and the synopsis of each film, you can sift out most of the perverted and otherwise offensive content.  I find their selection to include many films that are of no interest to me but I also find some of the most enjoyable and memorable films that I have ever seen amongst their revolving collection.  They also add a new film every day and that is interesting in its own way.

And now for Saturday Game Day.

Remember the show "This Week in Baseball"?  That show is probably the best show ever produced for MLB.  The show aired on Saturdays after the morning cartoons.

The narrator of that show made the show great.  It was Mel Allen, the voice of the Yankees.  One of the all-time greats.  The show would always start with him saying, "and now This Week in Baseball".  The show would review the highlights from the past week and report on the goings-on around the league and every week they would have a feature story or two to share with the audience.  I used to watch that show every week as a kid.

"This Week in Baseball" was usually followed by a Saturday afternoon broadcast on the Fox Network.  It served as the lead-in to the Saturday afternoon Game of the Week.  If you didn't have cable television, it was one of the only opportunities you had to view a game that was out of your broadcast area.  You might get Dodgers and Padres, or Yankees and Red Sox, or Reds and Brewers and it was an exciting game every week.

There was always a White Sox game on WFLD or a Cubs game on WGN but the Fox network games were special.  For a baseball fan, they always had this extra bit of shine to them and I liked those games on Saturdays.

I used to like ESPN Sunday Night Baseball too.  When Chris Berman was around.  They used to put on a good show.  Peter Gammons was usually on and Harold Reynolds added some life to the broadcasts.  It was always a game to look forward to.

I loath ESPN and everything they do today.  I loath their announcers and the smarmy Sportscenter windbags.  It's a trash heap of a network.  Same goes for all the others who tried to emulate what they were doing.  Cable television and streaming networks have become a cesspool of shit.

The streaming schedules and broadcasts, I can't make sense of it.  I listen to local games on the radio now.  I watch the highlights on Youtube.  I do like the free game of the day on the MLB.TV app.

I miss those days.  Saturday afternoon games on the network.  MLB.TV and the free games are cool but it isn't the same with the streaming.  Those Fox Network games were special.

That's all for Game Day today.
