Today's Pick: NYY (-155) ML @ ATH
After racking a pair of units, I still have 2.85 units in play. With a decent stack to push into the middle, a straight wager on a favorite makes sense. I like the Yanks at (-155) against the A's tonight.
Ryan Weathers (2-2) starts for New York. Weathers has posted strong numbers this season. His 3.14 ERA and 1.12 WHIP has him in the running for an all-star nod. A strong June could land him a spot on the AL squad. Weathers racks strike outs and limits walks and that will play well against the A's who rely on the long ball.
JT Ginn (2-3) starts for the Athletics. Ginn's numbers look similar to Weathers. He's posted a 3.19 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP on the season but Ginn has been hot and cold in May. Five walks against the Guards on May 1st. Nine hits allowed versus the Cardinals on May 13th. He was pulled after 2.1 innings in his last start on May 23rd after issuing six walks. The walks are going to blow him up sooner than later and if he lays one in the zone to one of the Yankees' big boppers tonight, that ball will be deposited in the parking lot.
The Yankees are raking. They are red hot at the plate. Over the past week the Yanks' bats have posted a slash line of .326/.375/.582 -- compare that to the A's who have posted a slash line of .216/.309/.314 over the same period and it is a dramatic advantage.
The A's don't hit left-handed pitching all that well. Yankees' veteran, Carlos Rodon, shut them down last night. The A's only managed four hits in six inning off the lefty. Weathers isn't Rodon but he is one of the Top30 left-handed starters in all of MLB. He is a good pitcher and can get the Yankees six innings tonight.
The Yanks' bullpen has had light duty for the last week. They haven't pitched all that well as a group but they are well rested and it's an advantage. The A's bullpen was taxed last night. Seven relievers were called on in last night's game and they threw a combined 142 pitches as a group. The heavy workload could factor in tonight.
With how well the Yankees have hit the ball over the past week, the price on this game seems low to me. I'm going to press it all and the price is nice at (-155).
