Practice Pick 10: NYY (-150) ML @ BAL

The smart money is piling in on the Yankees.  The line opened at (-180) and is currently sitting at (-150).  It's a fairly significant move in the odds.  I like the Yanks tonight as well.

Last season, Baltimore couldn't hit left-handed pitching.  They did add a pair of the games' best righty sluggers in Taylor Ward and Pete Alonso to address the issue.  They can slug with the Yanks when they are swinging the bats well but they really haven't hit this season.  Alonso is slumping.  Gunnar Henderson has nine homers but is hitting .211 with a .269 on-base percentage.  Tyler O'Neill has a .185 batting average and is slugging .241.  O'Neill was signed to big money to hit the long ball and hasn't hit many for the Orange Birds.

The Yanks' lineup with Wells at catcher, Chisolm Jr. at second, McMahon at third and Schuemann at shortstop doesn't inspire all that much confidence in a gambler but I like rookie Spencer Jones tonight.  It is a good matchup for the big lefty who has good power.  He is a 6'7'' 240 lbs. mammoth who swings through a lot of pitches but when he connects, he hits the ball a long way.  I think Jones cranks one tonight.

Brandon Young (3-1) starts for the O's.  He's a 6'6'' tower himself.  The righty is in his second season out of University of Louisiana, Layfayette.  This guy used to rack double digit K's on a regular basis in the minor leagues but has just a 7.0 K/9 in his MLB innings in '25 and '26.  He has only pitched around 100 innings total, most as a starter, and he has shown some slow progression towards improvement, but he has struggled in the middle innings and with the second pass through an MLB lineup.  He is good for a homer or two tonight against a Yankees' team with some good left-handed power.

Ryan Weathers (2-2) starts for the Yanks.  The lefty is the son of David Weathers who played 19 seasons with 10 MLB teams in the 90's and 00's.  His old man won a ring with the Yanks in '96.  Weathers hits 98-mph with the four-seamer.  It's a nice fastball for a lefty.  He has allowed six homers on the season, all to righties.  The O's have some big-time righty pop.  It's a big test for Weathers on the road tonight.  He has faired well this season in two road starts.

The Orioles' bullpen is a wreck and has played a big part in their early season struggles.  Garcia, Nunez and Akin all threw on Sunday and they have been the O's three best.  They aren't that "together" as a group.  They have had a number of injuries, have shuffled through a few different closers and ultimately they just aren't in any sort of rythym heading into tonight's game.  The bullpen for the O's is a major liability tonight.

The Yanks' bullpen shouldn't be counted on to deliver much tonight either.  They have had an exhausting run in the Yanks' past three games.  All losses.  New York doesn't have much available tonight but Brett Headrick can give them a good inning in the ninth.  Ryan Yarbrough can deliver a pair of clean frames in middle relief.  Camilo Doval is rested and that's worrisome.  Doval should be on his way to AAA soon.  Hopefully the Yanks don't need Doval to pitch tonight.

I feel like the pitching matchup is leaning towards the Yanks and I like the Yankees' lefty bats against the young righty Young.

Young righty Young.  Sounds Japanese.  He could be a good candidate for Nippon in a season or two.  I'm taking the Yanks and I like the price at (-150).
