Pick Result: NYY (-150) ML - LOSS
Yanks lose 3-2 on a three-run blast from Orioles' DH Coby Mayo.
Mayo was hitting .165 entering tonight's game. He hasn't made contact much this season but he does have some slug in his game. He took a 1-1 slider from Yankees' reliever Brent Headrick out of the ballpark. Mayo's third homer of the season.
Ryan Weathers had pitched an excellent game to that point. A nine-pitch at-bat vs. Tyler O'Neill ended in a free-pass and put Weathers over a 100 pitches. Aaron Boone called for the lefty, Brent Headrick, to face the right-handed Mayo. Why he didn't get righty righty on Mayo is a question for the postgame press conference. Mayo is hitting .147/.213/.206 against righties this season.
If Mayo has done anything well this season, it is slug left-handed pitching.
It seems Boone has the same reservations about righty reliever, Camilo Doval, as I had in the pregame but after watching Doval work the eighth tonight and checking his righty righty splits, well, I am uncertain what Boone is thinking in that spot. Right-handed hitters have posted a slash line of .156/.176/.281 against Doval this season and Doval was bringing the heat tonight.
He nailed Gunnar Henderson on a seven-pitch sequence that showcased his best stuff. He had the sinker working 99-mph, threw a 100-mph cutter and was hitting his spots on the outside of the plate.
Lefties have done some damage to Doval this season but if he is getting the outside strike call and hitting his spots, he has an effective approach against lefties with the high cutter and the sinker low and inside. After watching Doval pitch to Gunnar Henderson tonight, I am reassured about his abilities as a pitcher. That is one key take-away from tonight's game.
Orioles bullpen locked it down in the 7th, 8th and 9th. They went to Rico Garcia and Anthony Nunez. Both had pitched on Sunday. The duo has been good out of the bullpen for the O's this season, their two best. Kittredge, Akin, Wolfram and Cleavinger were all available on a days' rest but the O's, in a high-leverage spot, went back to Garcia and Nunez in the 8th and the 9th. Dennis Enns got them 1.2 innings in middle relief and gets the win. Nunez records his second save of the season.
O's starter Brandon Young pitched a good game and gets a game ball tonight. Only the one mistake to Ben Rice in the 3rd.

Brandon Young: 5.1IP 3H 2ER 1HR -- 5K 3BB (97 pitches)

It is still the preseason at Pickstreak. I am looking to go live next Monday after we get in a practice run at the Sunday Weekly Recap.
What that means is our official record for our picks this season will start next Monday. That's when we will start putting units into play and working towards out goal of banking 50+ units this season. Anything over 50 units in the bank is a winning season. Anything less than 50 units in the bank is a losing season.
4-6 on the preseason picks. It isn't that good of a record. It says to me that I should be betting more dogs and parlays this season.
Back tomorrow with another pick. Stay tuned.
