Game Day: Tuesday, May 12th

A full slate of games this evening, all 30 teams across MLB are in action, and all 15 games are late afternoon starts or night games.

Paul Skenes (5-2) is scheduled to start this afternoon vs. the Rockies from PNC Park in Pittsburgh.  He is a wopping favorite at (-345) against Michael Lorenzen (2-4) and I like the odds on that game. Skenes gave up a pair of dingers to the Cardinals in his last home start but has been real good otherwise.  Lorenzen was hired to pitch innings.and not necessarily to win games.  The Rockies have some good sluggers in Moniak and Goodman but Skenes is as tough as everybody makes him out to be and the Pirates bullpen is a good group. It's going to take a big effort from Lorenzen to shut down the Pirates offense.  The Pirates can hit a little bit this season.

Zach Wheeler (1-0) makes his second start of the season on the road in Boston, Mass.  Phillies are 7-3 over their Last10 games and have been playing good baseball.  Boston looks soft without Roman Anthony and he will likely be out of the lineup for the remainder of the week.  No starting pitcher is listed for Boston.  Their ace, Garrett Crochet, is also on the injured reserve.  How Boston intends to open the game tonight is anybody's guess.  It could be Ranger Suarez, it could be Sonny Gray.  One of the two should get the bulk of the innings tonight.

The Rangers ended the Cubs nine-game winning streak over the weekend.  Cubs travel to Atlanta to open a three-game series with the Braves.  The two teams sit atop of the division standings, with the Cubs a game back of the Braves for best in the NL.  It's Colin Rea (4-1) vs. Grant Holmes (2-1) in a 6:15 PM CDT start from Truist Park in Atlanta, GA.

Cardinals and the A's square off at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento in a battle of the underdogs.  The Cardinals have played well above expectations this season as have the A's to some degree.  The winner of this series is the legitimate underdog and the loser is a legitimate pretender.  That proclaimation makes this series very interesting.  Cardinals start Andre Pallante (3-2) and it's Jeffrey Springs (3-2) for the A's.  Game starts at 8:40 PM CDT.

Giants took the opener from the Dodgers last night, 9-3.  Rookie Trevor McDonald didn't get the win but he didn't take the loss either and kept his team in the game with 5.1 innings of less than spectacular baseball.  The Giants' defense stepped up and their bats put a crooked number on the board with Rafael Devers launching a Roki Sasaki splitter into the bleachers for his 5th homerun of the season. It was a big win for the San Francisco Giants.  It's Adrian Hauser (0-4) vs. Yoshi Yamamoto (3-2) from Chavez Ravine in the Tuesday Night Game of the Week.  LA is a big favorite with Yamamoto on the mound.  The Japanese import has been one of MLB's best since matriculating stateside in 2024.  It's a late game on the west coast and a 9:10 PM CDT start tonight for us midwesterners.
