Today's Pick: It's a Parlay Kind of Day
I have a two game pickstreak on the line and 2.6 units in play but I'm going to step off the mound and play a parlay while I have some house money in my account. Here is what I'm thinking.
I like the Tigers today at (-195). The Twins are starting reliever Travis Adams. He isn't going more than two innings. They could sneak Joe Ryan in on short rest. Their bullpen is on fumes. If Ryan doesn't pitch, they don't have any other starters on the roster to give them bulk innings today and they traded every bullpen arm they had at the trade deadline. Ryan is their best option to win a game today and they can set him back a day next week but do they want to throw their ace on short rest when they have already punted the season?
Casey Mize starts for Detroit. He has had a good season but has had three bad starts in a row. Mize has a long history with injuries and he isn't Nolan Ryan in regards to his fortitude. But the Tigers have a good bullpen behind Mize and have been hitting the ball over the past week. They are at home for the second series in a row and play far better at Comerica Park than they do on the road.
I like the Tigers today but both Mize's recent struggles and the outside chance that Joe Ryan gets some bulk innings has me half-stepping.
I like the Phillies (-205) today too.
It's lefty Jesus Luzardo starting for Philadelphia. The Orioles as a team haven't hit well against lefties this season. Luzardo, who had a red hot start to the season, cooled off dramatically in June but has posted a pair of good starts recently and has the potential to shut the Orioles out of this game. The Phillies bullpen has some new additions and their lineup has been fortified some with Harrison Bader taking over in left field.
It's Cade Povich starting for the Orioles. Povich has had a good rookie season but he hasn't shown the ability to shut a team down for six innings. The Orioles' bullpen is decimated. They don't have much left and are mostly auditioning prospects for potential opportunities in '26. The Orioles play bad defense too. They are bad all over the diamond. They made a pair of errors yesterday against the Cubs and it cost them the game.
The Phillies are at home and will be feeling good. Baltimore is in the midst of a six game road trip.
I could press it all (2.6 units) on one of the two games for a payout of around 1.3 units. Id take Philly in that scenario. I think Philly is the better bet today.
I can parlay the two games, risking only 1.0 units for the same 1.3 unit payday. It's a riskier bet, but it's less risk upfront. If I win both games, I'm up to 3.9 units in play. If I lose, I am still alive with 1.6 units in play.
I've decided to go with the parlay today and will look to boost my account some while keeping some risk off the table.
