Postgame Report: Tigers Win, Philly Wins Big!

Our parlay hit like an ice cold Miller Lite at sunset.  Neither game was much of a sweat and I think my pregame thoughts were fairly accurate on both.

Casey Mize had a good not great start for the Tigers.  He only allowed four hits and didn't issue any walks.  Three of the four hits were home runs but keeping runners off the base paths limited the damage.  Mize got through six innings on 67 pitches and that made it a nice and easy day for the veteran despite the three gopher balls.

Travis Adams pitched five for the Twins and had the lead when he exited the game.  The Twins couldn't have asked for much more from the rookie hurler.

Adams isn't fully stretched out but managed to get in some good innings on 63 pitches. The Twins went to their bullpen in the sixth and the Tigers took advantage of the opportunity.  Five hits and three earned off Noah Davis in the bottom of the sixth gave Detroit the lead.

The Tigers bullpen locked it down with three clean frames in the seventh, eighth and ninth.  Kyle Finnegan picked up his second save for Detroit since joining the team at the July trade deadline.  The Tigers won this game with the bats and the bullpen.  Minnesota's bullpen takes the loss.  Tigers win 6-3.

The Phillies' game played out in similar fashion.  Rookie Cade Povich had a good start for Baltimore.  He only allowed five base runners in 5.2 innings.  A pair of homers led to four earned but he kept the O's in the game into the sixth.

Phillies' starter Jesus Luzardo also had a good start: 6.0IP 5H 3ER 7K 0BB.  A pair of homers scored three runs but Luzardo limited the damage keeping runners off the bases with good command.  Luzardo gets the win in this game because he didn't issue any walks.

The Phillies jumped on the Orioles' bullpen for nine earned runs.  Harrison Bader hit a three-run homer off reliever Corbin Martin in the sixth.  Martin couldn't get an out.  He loaded the bases after Bader's three run shot and was promptly yanked.  Righty Yaramil Hilardo entered to face Kyle Schwarber.  The Schwarbino hit a grand slam to put the Phillies up 11-3.  Bringing a righty in to face Schwarber in that spot tells the story.  Baltimore's bullpen is short on quality arms.

The Phillies' bullpen locked it down.  With an eight run lead, they let long man Seth Johnson work the eighth and the ninth.  He struck out five over two innings of work.  The Phillies win this one 13-3.

We nailed both games.  I was counting on the bullpens to be the difference in both contests and today I was right.

We have 3.9 units in play heading into the night game.  I was going to press it on the Dodgers tonight but the Cardinals bullpen is in good shape and even though Sonny Gray has struggled, he is still capable of shutting the Dodgers down over six innings.  I'm going to pass on the night game and look for a better spot tomorrow.

I'm going to enjoy this win.  Three in a row.  We'll look for another good game tomorrow.
