Today's Pick: STL (-130) over PIT

The Cardinals face off with the Pittsburgh Pirates in game three of a three game series at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, PA.  The Pirates have a five game winning streak on the line and will look to sweep the Redbirds out of town in a early afternoon game that should be a good one.

Sonny Gray (8-2) starts for the Cardinals.  Gray posted a 2.25 ERA in June along with an 8.33 K/BB ratio.  The strikeouts play up in Gray's game and he is 2-0 against Pittsburgh this season while only allowing five hits total in 12.0 innings pitched.  Gray utilizes a seven pitch mix that he commands well relying heavily on a plus slider and a plus curveball.  He has some of the best breaking stuff in all of baseball.

Mitch Keller starts for Pittsburgh.  He pitches in a way very similar to Sonny Gray.  He utilizes a six pitch mix and relies heavily on his breaking pitches but he hasn't generated the swing and miss that Gray has and doesn't command the zone nearly as well.  He posted a 4.30 ERA in June with a respectable 3.25 K/BB ratio.  Compare that to Gray's June numbers and you can accurately make the assumption that Gray has the been the better pitcher this season.

Andre Pallante shut Pittsburgh down last night with eight innings of one hit ball.  The Cardinals' bullpen is well rested.  The Pirates are still without Dennis Santana who is on a four game suspension and Bednar, Ferguson and Mattson all threw 20 or more pitches in yesterday's win.

Despite the Pirates hot June at the dish, I think the Cardinals are a better hitting team from top to bottom.

I like St. Louis to win today and I like the price on the game at (-130).
