Today's Pick: NYM (-120) over BAL
The Mets had a day off on Monday and traveled down the coast to Baltimore for a three game series with the Orioles. It’s a 5:40 CDT first pitch at Camden Yards.
The Mets are 4-2 in July after a 12-15 June that saw them relinquish first place in the NL East to the Philadelphia Phillies. They get a Baltimore team that has flashed some potential but are realistically out of the wild card race and have been since the middle of May. Baltimore still doesn’t have the starting pitching.
Rookie Brandon Young starts for Baltimore. He has been in the rotation for a month now and it looks like Baltimore is happy with him eating up some innings albeit at a rate of 7.02 earned runs per nine. Young hasn’t pitched better than his ERA, he’s tagged that mark in four straight starts, and it's reasonable to expect that the Mets will score four runs off the rookie in the first five innings.
Clay Holmes starts for the Mets. Three Yankee relievers made the move into the rotation over the past two seasons. Holmes is currently the only man standing. The Padres’ Michael King has been on the IR since late May and Yankees’ starter Clarke Schmidt has an elbow injury that will require Tommy John surgery. I see it as being unrelated to today’s start but interesting nonetheless. All three pitchers have had success in starting roles, Holmes included. The righty has posted a 2.99 ERA in 93.1 innings pitched this season.
Holmes is the better starter tonight. The Mets have to be relieved, getting out of town with a series win over the Yankees. It was a tough month. With the All-Star break a few days away and a well rested bullpen, I think the Met’s will be playing loose tonight.
Baltimore also had the day off yesterday and brings a three game winning streak home to Camden Yards having swept the Braves over the weekend. But the Braves are down and out. It was a soft series for Baltimore. They’ll get a Met’s team tonight that is fighting for a playoff spot.
I like the Mets tonight. With Baltimore posting some recent wins, the price is nice at (-120).
