Postgame Report: Our Parlay Cashes, A's Tonight
An exciting slate of games this afternoon, none more exciting than the pitcher's duel in Cleveland. Gavin Williams ate his Wheaties and outpitched Tarik Skubal with six scoreless innings of one hit baseball.
Skubal pitched seven innings, allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out ten without issuing a single walk. Another unreal start for Skubal but give credit to Gavin Williams, he had a win on the line when he exited in the seventh and pitched like an ace today.
A lot went right for the Tigers in the ninth. Closer Emmanuel Clase worked in relief for Cleveland. He pegged the lead off hitter, putting the tying run on first base. Got Wenceel Perez to fly out to left field. McKinstry pinch ran for Torkelson and was thrown out attempting to steal second base but that call was overturned by the replay officials. It turned out to be the difference. Clase would get a grounder from Dirk Dingler that moved the runner to third. With two outs, Clase threw a wild pitch that scored a run before striking out Meadows, tying the game at one a piece.
Tiger's reliever, Chase Lee, bailed out Bailey Horn in the eighth, getting a pair of outs with two runners in scoring position. The Tigers left Lee in to work the ninth. Angel Martinez led off the inning for with a double putting the winning run on second base with nobody out. Lee managed to escape, sending the game to extras.
The Tigers nailed a pair of homers off Guardians' reliever Cade Smith in the tenth, scoring six runs in total off of Smith who has been one of the best relievers in all of MLB over the first half of the season. The six run lead held up, Tigers win 7-2 in ten innings
I was loosely following the Phillies and Reds game simultaneously. Chase Burns pitched well, striking out seven while only allowing one earned run on the outing. Reds' manager Terry Francona pulled him in the fifth inning.
The score remained 1-1 until the Phillies added a pair of runs in the eighth off Reds' reliever Tony Santillan to make it 3-1 Phillies. It was Wheeler in the ninth. He threw a complete game one hitter, striking out eleven on the way to his ninth win of the season. Good start for Burns, great start for Wheeler and that was the difference in this game.
The last game to wrap was the Red Sox, who led wire to wire in this one. They put four early runs on Ogasawara and Crochet pitched good enough through five to hold the Nationals to two runs.
The Nationals scored a run in the seventh and had the bases loaded with two outs, down 5-3, CJ Abrahms at the plate and James Wood on deck. Abrahms worked the count full on Greg Weissert before lining out to left field, ending the inning. It was a sweat. A base knock or a walk to Abrahms scores at least one run and would have brought up James Wood with runners on base. Wood is a masher in the mould of Aaron Judge. He could of turned the tables on this one with one swing. It was a very close game.
Chapman would lock down the eighth and new acquisition Jordan Hicks worked the ninth for Boston allowing one run before closing it out for his first save of the season. Boston wins 6-4.
It's not a big payday on the three team parlay, it only paid out at (+186), with all three picks being (-235) or better favorites on the day but it is a nice win. It's my first parlay win on the season, and it puts a unit in my pocket.
I'm going to rack a unit an press 1.55 units on the A's tonight. Rookie Jacob Lopez has flashed some really good stuff this season. While his last start in Tampa wasn't anything special, he has posted a 1.62 ERA over his last five along with 30 K's to 7 BB's in 22.1 innings. Compare that to Giants rookie Hayden Birdsong's 7.74 ERA over his last five starts with 22 K's and 16 BB's in exactly the same 22.1 innings pitched and you can garner that the A's have an edge tonight.
They are at home, Lopez has been the better starter, the A's have been a better hitting team all season. The price at (-125) seems fair. I like the A's tonight and am going to press 1.38 units on them to win.
Today's Pick: OAK (-125) over SFG
