Postgame Report: NYY (-165) Loss
When I first checked the scores it was 4-2 Toronto in the sixth. Gausman allowed ten baserunners but managed to hold the Yankees to two runs. He pitched well with runners in scoring position, stranding eight Yanks on the base paths. He was relieved aftwr five innings of work.
The Yankees tied the score in the seventh but for some reason Aaron Boone went to Mark Leiter Jr. in the bottom half of the inning. Leiter Jr. took the loss in yesterday's game. Weaver was available on a day's rest. Leiter Jr. gave up a hit and a walk with one out in the inning and was pulled quickly.
Luke Weaver got the call and after JC Escarra was called for catchers interference, Weaver gave up an RBI single to Ernie Clement and a grand slam to George Springer, 9-4 Toronto.
Boone's call for Leiter Jr. seemed designed more around saving his bullpen than winning today's game. It's hard to fault Boone, it's the beginning of July, if you can get another inning out of Leiter Jr. in that spot, you can possibly buy Weaver and Hamilton another day of rest but Leiter Jr. took the loss in yesterday's game. He didn't pitch well. It was a 4-4 game, Fried got you six innings, you had Weaver, Hamilton and Williams on a day's rest. Why risk going back to Leiter Jr. in that spot? I didn't like the call.
Credit the Blue Jays for getting the big hits. They'd score another three runs off the Yankees bullpen before it was all over, a 12-5 Toronto win. Three homers on the day. Fried only allowed four base runners, all of them scored on two home run balls. He pitched a good game otherwise.
After a strong finish to June we start July 0-1. It is disappointing to begin the month with a loss but I like a game this evening, I had planned on playing two earlier this afternoon when I made the pick on the Yanks. I'm going to play two today and maybe we can even our record at 1-1 before the night is over.
