Postgame Report: NYY (-145) Loss
The Yankees lost 5-2 in a game that saw Cubs' starter Matthew Boyd shut down the Yankees with eight scoress innings. The Yanks could only put together four hits off Boyd today.
What's this guy doing so well? I reviewed Boyd's pitch sequences. He's changing speeds. Boyd works a 95 mph four seamer with a 82 mph slider, a 78 mph changeup and a slow looping curveball that registers 72 mph.
He's laying it in there to every hitter he faces and he's letting his defense make plays. He's working in the zone, didn't issue a single walk, getting grounders, getting pop outs. It's been effective.
Judge squared him up three times, hit a pair of doubles. The Yanks did make some good contact but when they did, the Cubs made the plays on defense to keep New York off the basepaths.
Boyd struck out six and only threw 85 pitches before being pulled in the ninth. I don't understand why the Cubs didn't let Boyd work for the complete game with such a low pitch count and a five run lead but that's the norm these days. The complete game is a lost art.
Max Fried didn't come close to a complete game. He didn't make it out of the dugout for the fourth inning. Six hits, three walks in 3.0 innings pitched. It wasn't Fried's best effort.
The Yanks' bullpen kept them in the game but Matthew Boyd won this one for the Cubs and moves his record to 10-2 on the season. It's safe to call Boyd the Cubs' ace at this point.
Two losses in a row, it's been a difficult July. I think I've got one more card to play before the All-Star Break. Stay Tuned.
