Postgame Report: Mets (-120) Winner
The game didn't go the way I expected it to but the Mets got the win 7-6 in extra innings.
Brandon Young pitched good for Balty, he only allowed two hits through the first five innings. Young struck out the side in the top of the fifth and recorded six K's on the night. It was his best start of the season but he got nailed in the sixth, a homer and a pair of doubles put the Mets up 2-1 with a runner in scoring position and nobody out.
Young was well on his way to blowing up. Interim Manager, Tony Mansolino, let Young face Francisco Lindor. Lindor flied out. Mansolino went lefty lefty on Juan Soto and it was the right call. Baltimore reliever Gregory Soto got two outs to close the sixth.
It was a big hold for the Orioles. With Lindor, Soto and Alonso coming to bat, nobody out and a runner in scoring position, the Mets could have piled on some runs.
In the bottom of the sixth, it was the Orioles who did the piling to the tune of four runs and a 5-2 Balty lead. All four runs were charged to Mets' starter Clay Holmes.
There was no reason to pull Holmes heading into the sixth, he was under 80 pitches and had only allowed three hits through the first five innings. He didn't have it in the sixth, must have been the sun setting or shadows. He pegged Jackson Holiday and proceeded to give up four hits in a row to the heart of Balty's order.
Baltimore can hit the ball. The Orioles added a run in the seventh on a homer off the bat of Jackson Holiday. The home run trot was certainly nicer than getting beaned in the ribs.
The Mets looked to be out of the game but showed off their wares in the eighth. Leadoff hitter Brandon Nimmo singled, Francisco Lindor hit a two run shot, Juan Soto added a base hit and Pete Alonso went deep, a two run bomb that tied the game at 6-6. The Mets have some bats at the top.
The day off certainly contributed to this win for New York. Their bullpen was well rested and they were able to pitch their three best to close out this game. It was Garrett and Diaz pitching two scoreless innings in the eighth and the ninth to send the game to extras.
They'd add a run in the top half of the tenth, scoring the Manfred runner to make it a 7-6 game. Brazoban recorded his second save with a one two three inning in the tenth.
It was a big win for the Mets. A dramatic comeback win against the Orioles on top of a series win against the Yankees. The Mets have some good momentum heading into the All-Star break.
