Today's Pick: PHI (-235) over SDP
San Diego lost two of three to the Cincinnati Reds and traveled to the City of Brotherly Love for a three game series with the Philadelphia Phillies. Ace Zach Wheeler takes on knuckleballer Matt Waldron in a 5:45 PM CDT start at Citizen's Bank Park.
Wheeler is having the best season of his career and should be starting the All-Star game for the National League. He is also the frontrunner in the race for the NL Cy Young award.
The Padres haven’t seen Wheeler since 2023 but haven’t exactly had success against the righty. Wheeler has only allowed three earned runs total in his last four starts against the Friars dating back to 2021.
Matt Waldron makes his first start of the season for San Diego. The knuckleballer was in the Padres rotation for most of ‘24 but has been getting work with the AAA El Paso Chihuahua’s. His start on June 20th only lasted 2.2 innings. Waldron allowed seven hits and five earned runs before getting the hook.
The Padres bullpen will likely be without Robert Suarez, Adrian Morejon and Jason Adam. All three have pitched in back to back games.
It feels like San Diego is punting this one to get their rotation and their bullpen some much needed rest. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them rest some position players too.
I like the Phillies to win tonight and will lay the long odds but I am taking down two units, and will only risking 0.55 units on the pick. As much as I like this pick, I feel better closing the month with a two unit gain. If I can pick up one more win and a small payday heading into July, it’s a bonus.
