Today's Pick: NYY (-160) over BAL
It's the longest day of the year, June 21st, the Summer Solstice. While we have had an unusually cool spring, today is forecast to be the hottest day of the year here in the midwest. With the heat and humidity moving in, summer will be in full swing. On the official first day of the summer season we have a pick for you, and it's the Yanks.
Clarke Schmidt (3-3) starts for New York. The Yankees former closer made the move into the rotation in 2025 and he has had success. The workload hasn't been an issue. Schmidt has averaged nearly 6.0IP over his 11 starts this year. The righty hurler has a 13.2 inning scoreless streak working and has posted a 1.92 ERA over his last five starts. Schmidt has held opponents to a .305 SLG percentage at home this year and has only allowed two long balls at Yankee Stadium this season.
Zach Eflin (6-3) starts for the Orioles. Eflin has been on and off all season. He got shelled by the Rays in his last start at Steinbrenner Stadium in Tampa. His 5.9 K/9 is down substantially from his career mark of 7.7 and he has allowed 1.9 HR/9 this season.
Baltimore has been hitting better over the past month, they have gotten healthy with Westburg, Cowser and Mullins all back in the mix. It's a starting lineup that will feature five left handed hitters against the righty Schmidt but the Yankees starter has one of the games best knucklecurve balls, a pitch he works with primarily against left-handed batters. Balty will be tested today.
The Yanks bats have cooled off dramatically in June but they can hit home runs as good as any team in MLB. With Eflin on the mound, I like the Yankees to go deep early.
The O's bullpen has been real good, and they'll have three of their best: Soto, Baker and Dominguez -- all available on a days rest.
The Yankees relief corp is worn out but I like Schmidt to get through six innings today. The lefty Tim Hill is available to work the seventh, with Mark Leiter Jr. and Devin Williams available in the eighth and ninth. Williams has been New York's best arm in June.
We have a three game Pickstreak on the line, looking to make it four in a row. With 3.7 units in play, I going to rack a pair and put 1.7 units on the Yankees to win at (-160).
