Today's Pick: DET (-200) over CHC
It's the best of the AL versus the best of the NL tonight in Detroit.
The Tiger's enter with a record of 41-23, best in the AL. Tarik Skubal (5-2) makes his 13th start of the season for Detroit. What makes Skubal so good? He doesn't throw a lot of breaking balls, the movement on his pitches isn't spectacular, but he sits 98 mph with both his four seamer and his sinker and he has one of the game's best changeups. He mixes up his pitches in a way that keeps hitters guessing and locates the ball as good as any pitcher in MLB. Skubal has only given up seven walks in 75.2IP and has a 14.14 K/BB ratio. His numbers are unrivaled. His durability and consistency are unparalleled. He is the games best pitcher.
The Cubs enter with the best record in the NL at 39-23. Rookie Ben Brown starts for the Chicago. Despite some bad outings, Brown carries an 8.50 ERA over his last five appearances, he has managed to stick in the rotation and is coming off his best performance of the season, 6.0 innings of one hit ball against the Reds. Brown struck out nine in that one. He has a good fastball and an excellent knucklecurve, but that's about it. It's an effective two pitch arsenal but it will be 60% fastballs tonight and he doesn't have any other look than the four seamer. Opponents have hit .304 off the pitch on the season.
Both lineups are posted and both teams are at full strength. Righty Justin Turner gets the start at first base for the Cubs in place of lefty Michael Busch. Parker Meadows is back and leading off for the Tigers.
The Cubs bullpen has been good but threw 60 pitches last night against Washington. If Detroit gets to Brown early, expect to see recent acquisitions Chris Flexen and Genesis Cabrera.
I like Detroit tonight. Skubal will be geared up to challenge himself against the NL's best. With 4.13 units in play, I am going to press it all on the Tigers.
