Postgame Report: SDP (-180) Loss
All the cards lined up for San Diego last night but this morning the box score reads 10-6 Nationals.
It was a scoreless game through three innings. A throwing error in the top of the fourth made by starting pitcher Stephen Kolek opened the door. The error took Kolek off his game and the Nats' bats got to him for four hits and five runs.
Kolek didn't pitch all that bad: 4.1IP 5H 5ER 5K 1BB -- but he was off his game after the error. Padres manager Mike Schildt pulled Kolek with one out in the fifth. I like the call, Kolek was lambasted in his second pass through Washington's order and the Pads' bullpen was well rested.
Wandy Rodriguez entered the game. Peralta has pitched well in June and has been relied on all season in middle relief but he couldn't close the door last night. Washington rallied for four more hits and tacked on a pair of runs, 6-1 Nationals after five.
San Diego tried to climb back into the game with a run in the sixth on an RBI single from Gavin Sheets and a run in the seventh on a solo home run from Jake Cronenworth but their bullpen couldn't contain the National's offense. A three run bomb off the bat of Rookie slugger James Wood made it 9-3 Nats in the eighth.
David Morgan allowed the baserunners, Yuki Matsui gave up the home run to Wood. Padres relievers gave up five earned runs in the game.
Brad Lord pitched two clean frames for Washington, Josh Bell added a home run. Even the Nationals bullpen has a hard time blowing a seven run lead. Zach Brzykcy gave up three runs in the ninth but Kyle Finnegan put an end to the late rally for a 10-6 Washington win.
Credit the Nationals bats for the win in this one. Fifteen hits and a pair of home runs on the night. They have been hitting the ball well over the past week and are averaging 6.6 runs per game over their last five.
The Padres bullpen has slipped some as we approach the half way point. The return of Brian Hoeing should help keep them fresh but it was the effectiveness of Wandy Peralta, David Morgan and Yuki Matsui early in the season that has kept the Padres competitive. Kolek picks up the loss but it was Peralta, Morgan and Matsui who let this game get away last night.
