Postgame Report: SDP (-150) Winner
It wasn't looking good early, Vasquez was in trouble from the get go. In the first inning, he pitched around lead off hitter Oneil Cruz and issued him a free pass to first base. Cruz promplty stole second. Vasquez struck out Andrew McCutchen, but with first base open and one out, he threw two curve balls in the dirt to Pirates 3-hole hitter Bryan Reynolds. Vasquez had first base open in that spot, he was looking for the putaway with two strikes on Reynolds, but he missed with both pitches and walked him. The Pirates had runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. Normally, it's Joey Bart in the cleanup but he was taking the night off. Vasquez got Spencer Horowitz to fly out and a ground out from Ke'Bryan Hayes to end the inning.
Manny Machado went deep in the bottom of the first to give the Padres a 1-0 lead but in the third, Vasquez again pitched around Oneil Cruz. Cruz took his walk and swiped his second base of the game. This time around, Andrew McCutchen made Vasquez pay with a two run bell ringer over the left field wall.
The Pirates added two more of Vasquez and knocked him out of the game in the fourth. That's early, the Padres have a good bullpen, a call to the pen in the fourth usually doesn't end well but the Padres relief corps are a winning crew.
Wandy Rodriguez entered the game with one out and runners on first and second base with Oneil Cruz at the plate. He too pitched around Cruz. Cruz's third walk of the afternoon loaded the bases but Rodriguez nailed McCutchen on a 1-2 changeup and got Bryan Reynolds to ground out to end the inning. Clutch pitching from Rodriguez. The Padres escaped what could have been a big inning and an insurmountable lead.
Pirates starter Andrew Heaney held his own, pitching 5.2IP. He only allowed five hits and left the game with a 4-2 lead. His strikeout numbers are still off but he didn't walk anybody and got some good defense.
A good start, a pair of homers, but the Bucs bullpen couln't hold the lead. With their top three relievers unavailable, it was a Tanner Rainey in the seventh. Three walks from Rainey and a pair of singles off Caleb Ferguson in the seventh led to four runs and a 6-2 Padres lead.
It's Jason Adam and Randy Suarez in the eighth and the ninth for the Padres and that duo has been real good this season. They locked it down again. Adam racked a K and a hold without allowing a baserunner. Suarez picked up his 19th save, striking out two while also not allowing a baserunner.
Credit the Padres bullpen with the win in this one. Wandy Rodriguez gets the game ball for getting out of that bases loaded jam in the fourth. San Diego's bullpen has won them a lot of games this season.
It was a sweat but it's a win nonetheless. Back to the board tomorrow with 1.67 units in play.
