Today's Pick: NYY (-160) over NYM

I looked long and hard at the slate of afternoon games and couldn't make much sense of it all in terms of finding a matchup that had a definite edge to it, but I do like the Yankees to beat the Mets in tonight's Sunday Night Baseball game of the week.

Lefty Max Fried starts for the Yankees.  Fried has been the AL's best starter statistically.  He enters the game at 6-0 with a 1.10 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP over 56.2IP on the season.  Fried challenges hitters 60% of the time with his fastball, it's not a plus plus pitch in terms of velocity sitting at 94 mph, but he works a four seamer and a sinker together in a way that keeps hitters off balance.  He throws a sweeper and a curveball to get hitters out and the movement on his breaking pitches is as good as any offering in MLB.

It's lefty versus lefty tonight with David Peterson starting for the Mets.  The 6'6'' 240 lbs. troglodyte has pitched well this season and his game is very much similar to that of Fried's.  He throws a lot of fastballs, utilizes a four seamer and a sinker, and throws slider, curveball, changeup for the putaway.  But his fastball sits one or two miles per hour below that of Fried's.  His sinker doesn't sink like Fried's and his curveball certainly doesn't curve like Fried's.  Peterson also has a tendency to give up walks.

The Yankees hit left handed pitching better than they hit right handed pitching.  Aaron Judge has posted an astronomical .480/.606/1.280 slash line against lefties this season.  Paul Goldschmidt has also demolished lefties at a .571/.634/1.057 clip and Cody Bellinger, who swings the bat left-handed, has consistently hit left handed pitching far better than he has right handed pitching over his MLB career.  

It should be a great game.  The teams split the first two and will play a third at Yankee Stadium in New York City for the Subway Series title. I like the Yankees tonight and I like the odds at (-160).

Today's Pick: A 2 Team Parlay

I have 1.56 units in play after yesterday's quasi-disappointment.   I'm going to rack a unit, and play a two team parlay tonight.  I've been stuck on 32 units banked for two weeks now.   I can't stand the number 32.  It has everything to do with Magic Johnson.  I don't like magic and I don't like Johnson.   Anyhow, now that we have 33 units in the bank, I feel better. Jose Canseco wore number 33.  Still one of my favorite players of all time.   No analysis today, I'm just making a pick.  My season for the most part is over.  I have 0.56 units in play, 4.0 units in my account, and 33 units in the bank.   The pick is a parlay on the Astros (-350) ML / Blue Jays (-175) ML for a (+105) payout. Wednesday, August 6th: No Pick Today

No pick today, there isn't much on the board that I liked.  I didn't dig into any games but the Giants and the Pirates early this morning.  I liked the Giants but they don't hit left handed pitching all that well and Pirates had a well rested bullpen.  The Giants won that game 4-2.   I had thought about putting on my three dogs play with the Rangers, Reds and the Royals.  The Reds are down 6-0.  That would have been a loser.   There are some games later this afternoon and some late games too but I am going to take a pass on the action today and see if I can find a good spot tomorrow.   I'm sitting at 5.36 units in play and have a four game Pickstreak on the line.  We'll look to make it five in a row tomorrow.
